Joanna Brewster
Profession
Youth Mentor and Educator / Yoga teacher
Why did you decide to volunteer to teach the Free To Be program?
I decided to get involved because I have always been passionate about self-esteem and self-worth. Especially now, living in a society that pushes media in our faces from so many places, creating pressure to look a certain way, dress a certain way, live a certain way... What we don't realize is that much of what we see is not real - so we are striving for something that isn't even possible (because it is not real). I want to help change the way youth view media and I want to help nourish healthy self esteem and body image in youth.
What gets you excited to jump out of bed in the morning?
Honestly, it's my kids - they're my world! But I also get excited by learning, connecting, and sharing.... a good cup of coffee :)
What is something you are proud of?
My ability to be vulnerable, because it has opened doors to connecting with some amazing people.
In your mind what is the most important thing that Free To Be teaches?
Awareness! Without awareness there can be no change. Young people need to be aware that many images they consume are not real, they need to have conversations around values other than beauty, they need to be aware that they are not alone in how they feel. Through that awareness they can find strength and empowerment.
If you could go back and give your 12-year old self a piece of advice, what would it be
I would tell myself to let go of the fears and join in- you don't need to be the same, different, better or perfect... just be you! "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken" -Emerson.
