Why did you decide to volunteer to teach the Free To Be program?

A passion for positivity and self confidence is the first thing that pops into my mind. We live in a society that makes it so easy to focus on appearance and to compare ourselves to idealized standards. I think it is really important to actively remind ourselves that the things that make us truly happy are our accomplishments, goals, following our passions, and the positive relationships we form with the people in our lives and with ourselves. Free to Be fully embodies that message and I felt an instant connection to it when I came across the program!

What gets your excited to jump out of bed in the morning?

A sunny day, a new found love for coffee (I managed to get through my undergrad degree without a cup, and now I can’t stop drinking it!), an opportunity to achieve new goals, meet new people and spread a positive attitude.

What is something you are proud of?

I am proud of the work that I do with the families at Ronald McDonald House in the Music Therapy program. I feel so fortunate to be able to make a difference in the lives of some of the most courageous little humans I have ever met.

In your mind what is the most important thing that Free To Be teaches?

I'm not even sure where to begin, there are just so many valuable messages! I think that giving students the opportunity to take a step back and spend time recognizing that there are aspects of ourselves that are more important to focus on and develop than appearance is incredibly powerful.

If you could go back and give your 12-year old self a piece of advice, what would it be?

Be confident. Surround yourself with positive people. Do the things that YOU love, not the things that you think you should be doing.
